Czech intermedia artist Veronika Bromová was born in 1966 in Prague. She has exhibited in many places in Europe, USA and Asia. She was the first woman to represent the Czech Republic at the Venice Biennale in 1999. Her works are housed in important public collections in the Czech Republic and abroad, including the Czech National Gallery, Centre Georges Pompidou, Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Mumok in Vienna. From 2001 to 2011 she was the head of the New Media Studio II, Photography and Digital Image at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
She belongs to the generation of artists* women who* studied art academies before and after the fall of the communist system. She has enriched the new art scene with bold experiments using new technologies; without shame or compromise with a deeply personal and intimate artistic expression. At the core of her work are feminine themes, the body, gender, family, alternative family, nature, mythology, and in the last decade she has been developing her own modes of ritual - performance. She is inspired by the traditions of native peoples and cultures.
For 17 years she has been living with her family on a farm called Chaos in East Bohemia, 180 km from Prague and 70 km from Brno. She strives to live in harmony with nature and organizes a program for the Kabinet Chaos Gallery, which focuses on professional art and artistswhoare working with humanities and nature themes, and is a communication platform between the centre and the periphery. Since 2015 lectures at Anglo American University and collaborates with other institutions such as Artedu, CIEE, World learning, West Bohemia University of Art and Design, Masaryk University in Brno, Janáček Academy of Performing Arts, FaVU in Brno. Her work is also inspired by the study of art therapy and self-experiential dynamically oriented psychotherapeutic training.
Content
Walking through the countryside, from 30min to 1h, after repeatedly walking through the same or different places in the Chaos estate or nearby, weekend stays will be more intensive, the minimum time spent here can be considered more as a taster.
In the case of a longer stay, the interested person becomes a member of our family or community, which is continuously emerging and disappearing here, we are a “floating community”. Walking during longer stays, especially from spring to autumn, does not avoid a small participation in the work currently being carried out in the garden, meadow in the forest. For example, helping with raking hay, weeding, planting, collecting firewood, cleaning, cooking and washing dishes. If a person wants to be initiated by me/us, he/she should experience the local life in its fullest form.
My work has always been based on life, reflecting it. Much of it is based on my emotional experiences, practical knowledge and experience, and observation. In these activities we will get to know each other. Getting to know is an important part of working with anyone. You need to be clear about the motivation the person is coming with. I need to get to know myself, to feel myself so that I can better understand how to work with /you/ further. I try to use natural materials as much as possible, we can also recycle, everything I have here will be available for myself, from crayons, inks, papers, acrylic paints, 3D pen, clay, opportunities to work with ceramics, wood in the carpentry workshop, there are axes, saws, grinders, drills, potter’s wheel - which I am still learning on myself, kiln. In the case of working with ceramics, it would have to be a repeat visit. My husband would assist in the joinery workshop.
The art work itself would consist of reflecting on what is seen, experienced, or working with records, images, sound. The theme may be the changes of nature in the present shifted by the climatic crisis, the influence of man , agriculture. Or “Secrets of the Forest”, visions, mythological figures, activities in relation to events in nature, in the sky, significant turning points such as solstices and equinoxes. Work with wood, fire, water and air -basic elements. We may incorporate tarot, active imagery, techniques from art therapy, perfomative moments, body-environment interactions, dynamic meditation according to Osho, Falun Gong exercises, yoga, dance, music, pentatonic tuned instruments, shamanic drums and percussion. We can work with costume and mask, themes of reincarnation, finding the limits of the body, etc. As the initiation will take place within the confines of my home, it will need to be respected to some extent that I am a mother of 2 children aged 9 and 10, have a medium schnauzer dog, other dogs are mostly complications. The weekend retreat will have more free time for those interested which is desirable, a time to be alone, think and experience everything I will be communicating, possibly more time for creative work. All available media can be used. It is also possible to work with voice, I can invite a singer and actress friend , we can provide basic acting training. If only women participate we can work on e.g. the ritual technique of “Women’s Steaming”, we can work with the altar, the elements, intentions, all can be reflected on artistically and art therapy.
Either the interested person will come already with their intention and project, or we will try to generate it together and find a suitable form of realization.
